Join Diego Luna for a special screening of this urgent and intimate documentary which serves as a timely reminder that freedom of press must not be allowed to remain under siege anywhere in the world. “State of Silence” premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, Guadalajara Film Festival, and The Sheffield International Documentary Festival. It traces the compelling stories of four journalists (truth tellers) in Mexico who courageously navigate repressive tactics and violence putting them in danger’s path in order to shed light on the injustices endured by their communities. After the screening, join us for a riveting conversation with Luna, the film’s Producer/Director Santiago Maza, and moderated by journalist Maria Hinojosa.
Join lead actor and co-producer Héctor Medina for a screening of “Los Frikis.” “Los Frikis” is inspired by true events set in early 90’s Cuba within its punk music subculture. A powerful coming-of-age story – rooted in tragedy but filled with joy and hope- the film centers on 18-year-old Gustavo (Eros de la Puente) who idolizes his older brother Paco (Héctor Medina) and his punk, “Frikis” bandmates. When word reaches the Frikis of a potential reprieve from the effects of the economic crisis, they do the now unthinkable: deliberately inject themselves with HIV to live at a government-run treatment home. It’s there that these teenagers create their own utopia ultimately finding hope in unity and freedom in friendship, and rock’n’roll. The film stars Adria Arjona and is produced by Oscar winning Cuban filmmaker Phil Lord. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Miami Film Festival and Audience Award at Nantucket Film Festival.
“El Tesoro” features Oscar-nominated actress Adriana Baraza as Clemencia, a grieving but determined mother who takes on an unexpected mission after learning the last will of her son. In the film, Clemencia possesses the clairvoyant ability of tracking down and finding hidden treasures. In order to redeem the life of her son, she will have to convince Karime (played by Mónica Huarte), a desperate and ambitious widow, that there is a treasure buried in her garden, a space that actually hides a dark secret. With the help of Don Felipe (Roberto Sosa), a humble farmer, Clemencia digs hard and with each shovel she gets closer and closer to the sinister truth that ties her life to that of Karime and Don Felipe: a truth that has been woven by the ruthless hands of organized crime. Join award-winning Director David Rodriguez Estrada and Xochitl Oseguera of MomsRising for a thought-provoking discussion about the film.
