“Los Frikis” Screening & Talk Back

Moderator: Sigal Ratner-Arias, Deputy Editor, Billboard Español

Speakers: Héctor Medina, Co-Producer and Actor

Join lead actor and co-producer Héctor Medina for a screening of “Los Frikis.” “Los Frikis” is inspired by true events set in early 90’s Cuba within its punk music subculture. A powerful coming-of-age story – rooted in tragedy but filled with joy and hope- the film centers on 18-year-old Gustavo (Eros de la Puente) who idolizes his older brother Paco (Héctor Medina) and his punk, “Frikis” bandmates. When word reaches the Frikis of a potential reprieve from the effects of the economic crisis, they do the now unthinkable: deliberately inject themselves with HIV to live at a government-run treatment home. It’s there that these teenagers create their own utopia ultimately finding hope in unity and freedom in friendship, and rock’n’roll. The film stars Adria Arjona and is produced by Oscar winning Cuban filmmaker Phil Lord. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Miami Film Festival and Audience Award at Nantucket Film Festival.
